જ્યારે ટેપ સેટિંગ બદલવાનું હોય ત્યારે મુખ્ય સપ્લાયથી ડિસ્કનેક્ટ થયેલું ન હોય તેવા ટ્રાન્સફોર્મર આવા પ્રકારના ટ્રાન્સફોર્મર જેને ઓન-લોડ ટેપ ચેન્જીંગ ટ્રાન્સફોર્મર તરીકે ઓળખવામાં આવે છે. જ્યારે ટ્રાન્સફોર્મર લોડ પહોંચાડે છે ત્યારે સિસ્ટમ વોલ્ટેજને નિયંત્રિત કરવા માટે ટેપ સેટિંગ ગોઠવણીનો ઉપયોગ મુખ્યત્વે ટ્રાન્સફોર્મરના વળાંક ગુણોત્તરને બદલવા માટે થાય છે. ઓન-લોડ ટેપ ચેન્જરની મુખ્ય વિશેષતા એ છે કે તેના ઓપરેશન દરમિયાન સ્વીચનું મુખ્ય સર્કિટ ખોલવું જોઈએ નહીં. આમ, સ્વીચના કોઈપણ ભાગને શોર્ટ સર્કિટ ન મળવી જોઈએ.

ट्रांसफॉर्मर जो मुख्य आपूर्ति से डिस्कनेक्ट नहीं होता है जब टैप सेटिंग को बदलना होता है, ऐसे ट्रांसफॉर्मर को ऑन-लोड टैप चेंजिंग ट्रांसफॉर्मर के रूप में जाना जाता है। टैप सेटिंग व्यवस्था का उपयोग मुख्य रूप से ट्रांसफॉर्मर के टर्न अनुपात को बदलने के लिए किया जाता है ताकि ट्रांसफॉर्मर लोड वितरित करते समय सिस्टम वोल्टेज को नियंत्रित कर सके। ऑन-लोड नल परिवर्तक की मुख्य विशेषता यह है कि इसके संचालन के दौरान स्विच का मुख्य सर्किट नहीं खोला जाना चाहिए। इस प्रकार, स्विच के किसी भी हिस्से में शॉर्ट सर्किट नहीं होना चाहिए।

The transformer which is not disconnected from the main supply when the tap setting is to be changed such type of transformer in known as on-load tap changing transformer. The tap setting arrangement is mainly used for changing the turn ratio of the transformer to regulate the system voltage while the transformer is delivering the load. The main feature of an on-load tap changer is that during its operation the main circuit of the switch should not be opened. Thus, no part of the switch should get the short circuit.
